Michael Mafilios – Founder and Principal Consultant

Michael Mafilios is the founder of Health Economics Associates LLC and lead consultant for all HEA research projects. He is a health economist and medical writer with 20 years of experience in health economics research and consulting. Michael specializes in designing health economic evaluations (including cost-effectiveness models, decision analysis models, and budget impact models), preparing global value dossiers and local reimbursement dossiers (including AMCP dossiers), performing literature reviews, customizing HTA submissions (CADTH and NICE), and developing value messages to communicate the clinical, economic, and humanistic story of a new therapy to healthcare payers and providers. Michael has co-authored several papers and abstracts in leading medical journals on the costs and outcomes of medical technology and has conducted research in the areas of infectious disease, oncology, obesity, nephrology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, and urology.

Prior to founding HEA, Michael worked at Covance Health Economics and Outcomes Services as a senior health economics research consultant.  He received a B.A. from Georgetown University and also completed the Harvard School of Public Health’s Continuing Education Program in Cost-Effectiveness Analysis for Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals.

Steve Duff, MS – Health Economics Research Consultant

Steve Duff is a health economist with 20 years of experience providing health economic and reimbursement consulting services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and diagnostic companies.  Mr. Duff is the founder of Veritas Health Economics Consulting (www.veritashec.com) and provides a unique combination of health economics expertise with clinical knowledge and product development experience gained through various positions in the consulting and pharmaceutical industries.  Prior to founding Veritas, Steve was a senior consultant at Covance Health Economics and Outcomes Services where he focused on medical technology assessment, economic modeling, and development of dossiers, manuscripts, and strategic plans.

Mr. Duff received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of California, San Diego and a Master’s Degree in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard University School of Public Health.

Joseph Gricar, MS – Health Economics Research Consultant

Joe has 20 years of experience in health economics and outcomes research.  Mr. Gricar specializes in the design and development of interactive health economic models (budget impact, cost-effectiveness) as well as the design and execution of retrospective studies using large national healthcare databases in the US and England.  His previous work experience includes a field position that supported account management activities at provider groups, regional /national health plans and PBMs.  Joe was one of the original authors of the AMCP Format for Formulary Guidelines and served on the executive committee responsible for revision and dissemination from 2000 to 2008. His current consulting activities include working with pharmaceutical, medical diagnostic, and managed care companies to provide project management/strategic planning, financial modeling, budget impact modeling, database analyses and education/dissemination activities.

Joe received a Bachelor of Chemistry from Eastern Michigan University and a Master’s in Evaluative Clinical Studies from Dartmouth College.
